The Data
For this project, we were able to access data from the Open Data Archive of Louisville regarding the gun confiscations in Louisville for the years 2008-2017. While this data is public, it is also limited so information within certain crime types is masked, which means that part of the data is not available to protect the people involved. Additionally, the data dictionary that was provided by LMPD is not extensive, so we are not able to tell what some columns mean or how the data was collected.
To do this analysis, we had to combine three different datasets, listed below.
Firearms Data - Intersection
This dataset contains all confiscations that occurred at a street intersection. x and y values are included from the Kentucky State Plane North coordinate system.
Firearms Data - Normalized Address
This dataset contains all confiscations that occurred at a building that has a designated street address. This includes both commercial and residential buildings.
Firearms Intake
This dataset contains all confiscations between 2008 to 2017 regardless of location.
To analyze this data, we used Python to place the CSV files into dataframes and used Matplotlib and Pandas to plot images as we were exploring our data. For most graphs that were created, we ended up recreating in Tableau to get a crisper image. Our findings are below.

Confiscations by Sex
Males had 7,908 more gun confiscations than females.
