This week we discussed both why we can't be heroes and the uncertainty of science. After reflecting upon these ideas, I believe the two have much in common. For one, centering ourselves as heroes in science creates more room for bias error which can increase the uncertainty in data. In order to be true scientists, we must be authentic about the data we present. That means also being authentic and honoring the fact that science is constantly evolving and growing. If we try to make ourselves the hero, it has the potential to perpetuate the myth of certainty. This is the myth the general public holds that science is 100% indisputable. Perpetuating this myth can further cause individuals to expect certainty from science, which isn't possible. This can create dangers for both the scientific and general community, and create possible room for dishonesty. I also believe we cannot be heroes because it distracts from the purpose of science, which is to present factual and unbiased data. If one tries to do so while also being the hero, it strengthens the chance for bias and weakens the overall science process.
